Art, modern or classical, is to be enjoyed more than understood. This comes through patient familiarity, rather than by solving some riddle. A great jazz musician once said that if music could be explained with words, you wouldn't need the music.

But I didn't really appreciate the American artist Mark Rothko until I heard what Simon Schama had to say about him in his documentary Simon Schama's Power of Art. There is also more commentary on Mark Rothko at the Tate Gallery's website.
